....UUseful (?) Tables etc.
I'll use this page to put up tables, spreadsheets, etc. that I've devised to help in the design of steam locos etc. Hopefully they may be of use to others.
Water Consumption Calculator and pump capacity - A spreadsheet to calculate the water consumption of a steam loco at any speed and also the output of axle pumps etc. Useful for getting a rough idea of what size axle pumps or injectors you will need for a certain loco. Please note that the original version of this spreadsheet contained an error that results in the water consumption being calculated as twice what it should be! I've uploaded a corrected version. Thanks to Svend for pointing the error out to me.
Copper tubes - A spreadsheet to show the internal bore etc. of copper tubes of various wall thicknesses.
Number and Letter Drills - Chart of the sizes in inches and millimetres.
Fractions of an inch to decimal and millimetres - Conversion Chart
Model Engineer Index Part 1 (Volumes 1 to 206) - Index in FMPRO format.(Zip file)
Model Engineer Index Part 2 (Volume 207 to 210) - Index in FMPRO format.(Zip file)
Model Engineer Index Part 1 (Volumes 1 to 206) - Index in CSV format for use with other database programs (Zip file)
Model Engineer Index Part 2 (Volume 207 to 210) - Index in CSV format for use with other database programs (Zip file)
Please note that the above ME index files are compiled from those produced by Bill Philips and Chris Orchard. Many thanks to them for making them available - they are worth their weight in gold!
Locodesign1 - Spreadsheet based on the work by Jim Ewins for matching boiler grate area etc. to cylinder and wheel size.
Locodesign2 - ditto
Locomotive Dimensions - A spreadsheet originally devised to show the relationship of a particuler design to the Jim Ewins formulae but contains useful information about grate areas, tube areas, steam consumption etc.
Locomotive Draughting - Spreadsheet designed to be used with the articles by Harold Barton in Model Engineer for July 21st and August 18th 1989. I've used Harold's ideas to improve the draughting of several locos.
LBSC's Locomotives - Spreadsheet listing all LBSC designed or built locos based on information from Brian Hollingsworth's book on LBSC. Note that some of them were rebuilds of commercially available locos and many were not described in any of the magazines of the time.
